Using Drupal as Your Content Management System
In the world of internet websites, the sky is the limit on the capabilities, and the amount of content you can add. However, managing these features can be very daunting as a site continues grow.
This where content management systems, also known as CMS's, come into play. They tie the management of different data, pages, pictures, and programs into one centralized location. This normally allows for a single user login to work in multiple forums and other interactive media in the site.
Today we are discussing the CMS known as Drupal, and why it is different than many other options. Other content management systems, such as Joomla and PHPNuke, let you download and install a wide range of independent programs for each of your needs. For example, you could download phpBB for your forum, then a separate photo gallery script, and another blog script. This can be used to fit individuals specific needs. However, it is also complicated due to integrating user databases and keeping all the programs updated and working together.
Drupal is different. Drupal is a single program that contains the most common features most people want in a website, without additional programs needed to be installed. While not as customizable as Joomla or PHPNuke, the setup is much simpler and all self contained in the Drupal script. It has forums, blogs, articles, comments, and photos all in one program. Updates are provided regularly and cover all you major components. Drupal also includes features that rename each page statically to the title of the page, which helps greatly with search engine traffic.
Each CMS has it's pros and cons, and needs to be evaluated based on its intended purpose. For simple sites without lots of one-off needs, and sites that are being built primarily for small communities and search engine traffic, Drupal can be a great fit!
