http://yourname.sitesled.com/ actually is pulling up the file index.html from the root level of your account.
http://yourname.sitesled.com/photos/ pulls up the index.html file in the /photos/ directory.
Obviously, if you specify a filename, it will go to that file directly
http://yourname.sitesled.com/photos/vacation.html will pull up the vacation.html in the /photos/ directory.
Generally when people give out a web address they don't include a file name. They just include something
like yourname.sitesled.com. Therefore, the index.html file becomes the primary "home page / entrance page"
of the site.
