Playing your MP3 files on your PSP: |
Fancy using your Sony PSP as an MP3 player? - Here's how:
Step one: Check free space
Firstly, you need to transfer your MP3 files onto your Memory Stick, so you will want to check that you have enough free space on there first. (Don't forget to allow free space for saving your game progress too, as this is where the PSP saves your games to too!)
Step two: Check MP3 compatibility
Secondly, there are many different formats which MP3's can consist of. The main concern is the MP3's bitrate. This can range from 8kbps (poor quality), to 320kbps (excellent quality). However, not all portable devices such as the PSP support the full range, as the most common bitrate today ranges from 123kbps - 190kbps.
Therefore, if you store an incompatible MP3 file on your PSP, it will not be able to play the file, and in some cases, may not even recognise it as an MP3.

The PSP supports bitrates of; [SUPPORTED BITRATES TO BE LISTED HERE]
You can check an MP3's current bitrate in newer versions of Windows by right-clicking on the file and clicking properties!
This will then bring up a window identifying the MP3's bitrate.
Alternatively, you can use an MP3 player such as WinAmp, which indicates the bitrate of the current file it is playing.
Step three: Transferring the tracks
There are two ways to transfer the MP3's onto your PSP's Memory Stick. You can either connect the device directly to your PC, using the PSP's USB port. Or you can use a Memory Stick recorder device connected to your computer.
Simply connect your USB cable from the device to your PSP, and wait for Windows to recognise it.

Got no MP3's ?
I know there will be many PSP owners who are just itching to try out all of it's cool features, and who perhaps don't have any MP3 files on their computer. Unfortunately, getting MP3's legally can be a bit of a confusing issue due to the whole P2P revolution.
RIP YOUR CD's:
You can legally rip your CD music collection into MP3 format to store on such devices as the PSP, by using a program such as FreeRip.
DOWNLOAD OUR MP3's:
If you're still stuck, then we have some MP3's here at PSP Overload for you to use if you wish. You can download them here. They are completely legal, we happen to know the artists who produced them and they thought it would be a good idea to include them on our site!
