John Marwin - The Reluctant blogger

I'm John Marwin, a compulsive musician who dislikes scripting HTML and the like. My page looks horrid, but that's fine with me as I I've designed it to be as simple as possible. Running it through the WC3 validator is funny though ;) And here.. are the news:

2010-06-24 - Finally the sun has risen!

(edited date, goddamn.. I need to pay more attention!) I usually only pimp my stuff here, but in this instance, I have to share this all with you: Halfquake Sunrise This is essentially a mod for HL1 which is the third in an awesome triology that just got finished a few days ago. If there are more parts to come, I don't know actually, but considering that they'd have to switch engines for it, I would doubt it. I usually tell my friends that portal is the wuss version of halfquake, and I stand by that statement even today. If you liked portal, not for the shiny ZOMG PRONTALZ game mechanic, but for the feeling of being trapped and not knowing anything while being tormented by some unseen horrific person, you *really* should take a look at these three games :) Personally, I would call these three mods full on games because they truly expand upon the HL engine quite a bit and .. hey, they're artsy too! When it comes to pimping my own stuff, well.. errr.. I've been lazy lately, but I am working on a game sound track now as well which is going to be released sometime this year unless I get hit by a car, in which case it's unfinished verison will be released sooner :P Anyway, I'm not dead yet.. just very very slow in making music. links: CTG | Archive.org | Modarchive.org | TiS //John Marwin

The Effects Of Too Much (green) Tea (and a bit of musings)- 08-07-27

Everyone whose ever talked to me regularly knows that I always go on about my tea, yes if the world ended and I had to choose between a human for companionship or a years supply of differing teas, that person would be out of there faster than you can hear me say "omgJossWhedonispossiblymakingasequaltothedrhorriblethingie!" :P So, I've always told people "hey, out of inspiration kid? try doing a tea overdose or two when you're very sleepy, it'll make your brain go haywire!" .. well, as it would seem, the joke is definitely on yours truly ;) For ages upon ages, I've always been under the firm impression that green tea IS CRAP. Yes, it's stuff that just tastes weak and bitter as hell. .. that is, until I understood that I'd been soaking it wrong. Apparently.. (I'm blushing as I write this) you're supposed to let green tea soak in hot water for THREE MINUTES. Yes, THREE (3) MINUTES, it can't be emphasized enough with me apparently. So, I discovered that green tea was pretty much the tastiest shit around and found out a whole new world existed in the universe of teas. So far so good right? Well, as it would seem, green tea also contains lots of stuff that normal teas have very little of. In this case polyphenols, which are normally good for you when ingested in normal dosages. Well, what they don't tell you is that it can also cause liver and kidney damage if consumed in large enough quantities for a long enough time. And as I drink huge fucking VATS of tea (I have one 1.0 litre cup and a 0.7 litre one) you can imagine that my kidneys weren't too happy about the idea of green tea in general, so they got testy (heh) and started to introduce a bit of blood into my urine, as if to tell me "DUDE, LAY OFF THE FUCKING GREEN TEA ABUSE ALREADY!" The earlier mentioned vat of tea ^ So .. the consensus of it all is that a) tea is still good for you b) green tea can kill you and c) Peeing blood for a week without knowing why is fucking creepy. But, I still maintain that using regular tea in large quantities when you're tired in the middle of the night will still produce that "high on tea" buzz that works so well in terms of inspiration. Also .. .in other news, I've been pondering putting up a donation button on my site as my economy at the moment is pretty weak, but a part of me recoils from that as it would almost effectivly be like making money off my music .. a thing my dad has always warned me about doing. So I don't know at this stage, perhaps I will .. perhaps I won't. Some people have told me that there's no way in hell I'm getting any donations, others have told me that it's worth a shot anyways. Aaaand just to make it abundantly clear, I love comments on my music. Yes, if you have any kind of comment, throw it at me, no matter how serious or silly it is. I welcome all opinions as they show me that there's somebody out there still listening to what I do and that's the reason I'm doing this blog thingie in the first place! links: CTG | Archive.org | Modarchive.org | TiS //John Marwin

STOP THE PRESS, WHEDON IS BACK! - 08-07-21

Yes kiddies, the creator of Buffy the vampire slayer and Angel, and lots of other cool stuff is actually back in the saddle in a most unexpected way! http://www.drhorrible.com Seriously, there's nothing I can say here that will convey the awesomeness of it all, so just go there .. like NOW! Still here? .. whoa O_o ... guess you're really a fan then! Well, for you die hard ones, I have a bit of a treat too: a new song! No wait! it GETS BETTER! I actually have two new songs, and one of them is actually released over at Chimera music :) http://www.archive.org/details/DrowningInTheDesert http://www.chimeramusic.net/releases.php Also, while you're at it, you might also want to check out Akuchizoku, a game developed by the game artist Cactus! "John, oh John, what is so special about this game then?" I hear you ask. Well! The fact that the game has a story more twisted than two drunk pythons trying to have sex in a bottle of oil should be interesting, but there's also the added incentive that you might hear a bit of my songs I've put together as a custom sound track for the game too. So far, there's only a demo out, but I'll be sure to post when the full thing is available for download/purchase (yes kids, this is donationware) So kids, until it's show time for real, here's the demo: http://www.willhostforfood.com/files/167272/akuchizoku_compo.zip Anyways, that's the little pie I had to throw at your face for now, I'll see you around later some other day :D AGH! STOP! .. stop stop stop stop! don't you dare navigate away from this page yet! I forgot the best part: Louigi Verona has been declared innocent of his ripping charges now too, it's all most excellent, now if only Space Walk would take up the slack and prove his innocence too, all would be dandy.. but all in due good time I guess! (and yes, that means my TiS profile is back up) links: CTG | Archive.org | Modarchive.org | TiS //John Marwin

And life goes on... 08-06-25

Yeah... and apparently I've made a new song too, a chimera release is in the works later on too! Also, I've formally suspended my profile over at Traxinspace in support of a fellow artist named Space Walk whom I have had great times with in the past. He has been accused of being a ripper on very shaky grounds, and as most of you who know me are aware of, I dislike false accusations when it comes to ripping. So, I urge anyone who cares about Space Walk to suspend your profiles too on Traxinspace, you needen't remove your songs, just hide them for the time being. But, I will say this: if an official apology isn't issued that clearly states that Space Walk IS completely innocent of ripping, I will never re-activate my profile over there again. I'm sorry, but this is what my conscience tells me is the right thing to do, I'm terribly disappointed by how everything turned out, but until things are resolved over there in a satisfactory manner, this is what I'm going to do. Anyways, to lighten the end of this post, here's my latest song! When One Approaches Zero And as always, if you want the source file, just contact me and we'll work it out! links: CTG | Archive.org | Modarchive.org | TiS (Suspended) //John Marwin

A blast from the past!

- The things we take for granted... - 2008-02-14 -

http://web.archive.org/web/20010420160139/www.traxinspace.com/Artists/MusicDirectory.asp?ArtistID=2084 As a part of a project I can't disclose the details of yet (it's a surprise you're gonna love!) I've been temporarily forced to use milkytracker again.. and even though milky is a balls on PERFECT clone of FT2.. I realized with a start just how different using that oldschool technology is to me now. Browsing samples was a chore, loading samples was a chore (which channel do you want? left or right? Muahahah!) even inputting stuff with the old FT2 settings was incredibly hard.. so in the end, I was humbled by how far I could go with renoise nowadays. Do you want that echo? forget using a VST for that, you'll need to make a channel then copy it to four other channels and alter the volumes, OR use an instrument envelope which is cheating :D No dsps.. which means you don't have any EQ, or filtering, or flanger (controllable flanger that is) or any other useful effect that you might think of. Synths will have to be made a certain way by sampling, not real time alteration of the sound :P So yeah, if you're a renoiser and want to appreciate your programs finer qualities, try milky tracker.. if only for the oldschool feel! links: CTG | Archive.org | Modarchive.org | TiS //John Marwin

- Chimera versus the grazing panzerwagen - 2008-02-09 -

Yeah, so it's finally out, the long awaited Chimera pack no 7 :D I've contributed a song called "The Tale Of The Grazing Panzerwagen" which is well uh.. just read the inmod text ok? (if you happen to view the mod, otherwise you suck :D ) Here's the link to the mp3 version of the pack: http://www.chimeramusic.net/files/mp3/Chimera007__Stratosphere_mp3.zip and here's a link to the modular version: http://www.chimeramusic.net/files/mp3/Chimera007__Stratosphere_mod.zip Anyhow, I hope you enjoy it :D ps, I'm going to move my page to a new CMS which is created by Jace which will be hosted on my own webspace :D But.. that's for next month, so stay tuned! Sometimes life makes you go :O 2007-12-03

http://www.igf.com/02finalists.html This is incredible to say the least, the game Clean Asia has made it this far, getting nominated in this huge competition.. just the nominations is blowing my mind here to be honest. And as I typically shun publicity it scares me aswell, but .. now it's safe to tell the world my secret childhood dream: To one day be involved in making a game, and as such, I've furfilled that dream now, and if I get the opportunity, I'll ride the tail of the dragon and work as a full time game music developer. To be honest, this prospect scares me as much as it exhilirates me, because I've always told myself that I shouldn't sell my music, and keep it free to preserve the fun of making music. However, as I'm writing the soundtrack of Akuchizoku now, I can safely say that I'm having the time of my life, and I hope the same goes for any game music dev job I might have in the future. *shakes head* I still think you're all nuts! links: CTG | Archive.org | Modarchive.org | TiS //John Marwin

And in related news.... 2007-11-18

I've joined the group known as Chimera as of today, they're a fairly underground tracker label (one of the last I suppose) that still release their mods online. http://www.chimeramusic.net I'm really honored to be part of a group that still honors a dying legacy. Edit: *blushes* erm.. I forgot to make the link into a clickable one .. pardon me :P Now for some serious insane tracking... links: CTG | Archive.org | Modarchive.org | TiS //John Marwin

And here we go again! 2007-11-16

Sorry people, haven't got any new songs for you this time around.. oh ffs, hold on, I feel guilty for having +10 songs unfinished, so I'll finish one now! Update: due to unforseen events, I won't be posting the track today. I will instead post two tracks tomorrow, sound good? I wrote one of them during an hour just now, I'm feeling incredibly bad emotionally, so I'll just end this by saying "Let's all die a little bit on the inside shall we?" and leave it at that." Update @ 2007-11-17 They're finished finally, do enjoy, and if you don't, be sure to send me some hate mail ok? Major changes in life 2007-10-12

Where do begin? My 7 year old relationship with the missus has ended, it has fortunately made me a bit more productive as far as music goes. I rummaged through my onway dir and finished not only one, but THREE songs at once. They were just in need of some polishing after all! Anyhow, here they are: Life Interrupt This is my song where I try to deal with this sudden change in life, if you want to read the story text you'll have to get the eight meg version from the site. Trust me, it explains alot regarding the song! Tower Of One This was written for a game, but since the dev hasn't been in contact with me regarding it's usage I figured I'd release it online for everyone to enjoy! Commands This third song is only available for download if you register at traxinspace, and the reason for this is that it's a song which is made to show off the capabilities that Renoise has to offer. So, unless you're a Renoise addict, you won't really need to listen to this as it's not very melodically interesting. However, if you truly want to listen to it, you can always stream the damned thing! Just don't say that I didn't warn you regarding it's suckage! Also, this month I'd like to point all you sci-fi nerds to an online book which I've been reading alot lately, it's called Street simply, and it's about a bleak future in which Gina, a girl with a very colorful past tries to survive on the street. And no,it's not one of those "IMMA HOKKAH" books, it's actually a pretty dynamic and detailed story. Personally I get so caught up in the scenes that I almost smell and feel everything that goes on in them and at one point, I flinched when something sudden happend in the story! So really, I love this online book, and even though I want the author to become filthy rich selling it, I'm hoping he won't sell it until it's finished, because I'm out of cash :D Street links: CTG | Archive.org | Modarchive.org | TiS //John Marwin

Setting the record straight (2007 07 11)

Alot has happend since last, TiS has gone online, and so has another profile of mine over there aswell :)
Also, I've got a project going aswell over here now, I'm writing a soundtrack for a game (coded by cactus, same guy that
made "Clean Asia") called Akuchizoku which is basically a sidescrolling shoot 'em up :) (but it's got a whole lot of twists
might I add) Now, everything would be glorious if it hadn't been for one itty bitty annoying detail that's happend..
Gametrailers picked up the trailer and apparently saw fit (for some reason) to replace the audio with a track from
Cave Story. Now, the problem is now that everybody thinks I'm a ripper or something, which of course is far from the
truth!! And of course, people are putting up this bad trailer everywhere online aswell, but I'll comment wherever I find
them and set the record straight that it's not my fault. As for the gametrailer people, I don't know what they're on, but
it's pretty annoying that they didn't mention that they had botched up the audio like this, it's damned annoying to be
labeled a ripper just because they can't handle some audio issues!

At any rate, here's the link to the site of the game: http://www.akuchizoku.co.nr/

And do note that the trailer does have audio quality issues, (HIGH BASS) which is a direct result of FRAPS being a bitch
I'd suspect.

Misc. updates (2007 04 21)

New songs are up, in case you've missed them at both CTG and The Internet Archive, the ones to look out for are "Doom Mood"
which is a rather nice and calm little thingie, and also "My Castle In The Clouds" which is a very nice and subtly cheesy tune aswell :D
Also, there's the third and newest song which is called "Complete And Utter Defeat" which basically is me being emo about my life.
(however, fear not, life has improved alot since that was written)

All these songs are available at the internet archive atm, and if you wish to comment easily on them, send me an email or find the songs
on my CTG page! (you don't have to register to comment at CTG, all you need to do is to verify that you're not a bot by entering a security code
which is displayed next to the field where you enter the comment). AND, although it may not seem that way, I do like comments on both my music
and my stories, in fact that's the main reason I'm releasing these publically at all. Really, if nobody bothers to comment on my stuff online, I might
aswell just release them to those that I know will comment (*smiles and waves to everyone at both MSN and IRC*)

I just want to know that there's somebody at the other end listening, because if there isn't, this is just uneccessary work for me and even worse..
a fucking waste of time! (and since I started my internship, it's really important to start managing one's personal time)

Also, another note, I will have to create a proper frames webpage and start cataloging my releases in a more efficient way, because this isn't
really working out for me at the moment. What I'm going to feature is a story section where all my stories are going to be released in TXT format
because archive.org org automatically makes five versions of my original song I upload, and those derivations don't contain the mp3 tag which
has my stories in it, SO IM SORRY THAT ALL YOU PEOPLE DOWNLOADED A VERSION THAT DID NOT HAVE A STORY IN IT!
However, if you download the 320kbps version, there will always be a story tag in there, mainly because it's my original song that's been uploaded.
Anyhow, that's about it, I hope I can perhaps get the frames version operational by the end of this weekend, but that's alot of HTML to relearn :P
(and it's NOT going to be pretty, but it'll work!)

Also, that frames page will have annual archives of some of my previous tracked songs, mainly to show more of my journey in music throughout
the years. However, as there are some songs which are made for specific people only, I'll have to screen those out before I zip up the modules.
(and that'll take time.. goddamnit.. so many things to do, and so little time in doing them!)

Btw, here's a picture of the month :D

And oh yeah, the poll at CTG is getting closed today, the verdict is in, since not enough people voted, I'm not going to release my sources
online, however, drop me an email at my adress listed at CTG if you want to see "how I did it". I will honor anyone's request.

So, that's really it for my montly update!

//John Marwin

links: CTG | Archive.org | Modarchive.org

Alright, finally it's completed! (2007 03 19)

I've finally managed to get my song "I Strogg" finished, it turned out very differently than the original test song was.. but I guess that's all good :D
Clean Asia continues to gain popularity and that of course means that the forums around the net are boiling with comments about the game
and of course, it's music... I thought I'd get used to hearing positive stuff about the songs in that game, but apparently.. I can't adjust :P
Anyhow, here's the actual link to "I Strogg" aswell, if your player supports viewing ID3v2
tags I suggest you take a look at the story I wrote in that song aswell, hopefully you'll like what you read.. comments as always are always welcome!

And again, if you like to see my Renoise sources online, do vote at my CTG page, if I don't get enough votes (at least 40 in total) I will declare this poll
as lost and assume that nobody except a select few people care about seeing how I make my tunes, however if I do decide to only release in mp3 I will
still honor any email that comes in with a request for a source file, so fear not you people that want to see the source, you'll get it either way!
(you just have to get off yer arse and mail me to get it)

Well, that's it for now, see you around!

//John Marwin

What a difference a few songs can do! (2007 02)

Wow, sometimes you go through a week, releasing your stuff.. thinking that nobody cares.. when
something like THIS happens to you, and you're completely stumped for words.
Yes, apparently I had a rather major impact on some people around the world, and now thanks to that, Cactus game secured the number one
spot in the competition in question. Now, I'm the first one to admit that Cactus game alone would have probably snagged no 1 anyway, but

I really can't do that since I'd be going against the ruling of the three judges that decided that it was a major factor. So here I am, stumped for words
that there are people who not only understand the style of music that I make, but also like it ALOT!

Now, I very rarely hear from my fans, there's the odd email here and there, and there's also the odd comment on CTGMusic.com aswell. But most of
the time, the feedback I get is requested by myself from friends I know both online and offline.. so really when I say that all
this massive positive feedback is a bit overwhelming, you really have to put it into that context first :D

Now, as you may have noticed, this page isn't going to be reactivated anytime soon, school is a bitch, life is a bitch, the girlfriend is a bitch :P
It all adds up, at the end of the day, I'm lucky if I can squeeze in an hour of tracking.. and most of the time spent there is wasted because it's rarely
that hour of the day when my inspirational muse is with me. (she's a fickle lil thing haha)
So the net outcome is that I don't release as many tracks annually as I used to, hell.. last year was a fucking DISASTER in that regard!
(then again, last year was a total disaster overall.. so no suprise there!)

If I do get the time to get this thing into gear, I'll throw up zipped files of all my work I deem good enough for release, I'll start with the 1999 year
and go up to my most recent years and collect them all into annual zips, that'll will save both you and me some much unneeded hassle I suspect.
(after all, you wouldn't want to click +100 links now would you?)

Anyhow, thanks for everyone's feedback and for your trouble's, here's my two most recent releases:

6¶wÎ¥Ðe¥9¨¿ <- Made for somebody who thought I'd should be more experimental than I already am.
Agent Theme <- A nice tune which is heavily influenced by the show alias :P

As always, this has been:

//John Marwin

Alright, time to reactivate this page again!

Heya people, missed me? Haha, you probably didn't :P Anyhow, since the last time there was anything
of value on this page, ALOT has happend, a SHITLOAD OF ALOT to be honest!
Alright, alright.. where to begin.... hum hum....

Oh yeah, there are some new files up for downloading, first up is the last song of the previous year called
2006, get it here why dontcha?
Also, while you're at it.. you might want to take a gander at the COMPLETE $l@$h Puppy Storyline!

Oh yeah, as you might have noticed, that 2006 was an mp3, the reason for that is simple.. I'm no longer using FT2
to make my modules! (DUN DUN DUN! ) yeah, I've upgraded my computer which means that I can run some
more heavy software, which in turn means I can do more shit, so in the end FT2 became too small for me.
Granted I could have continued with it and probably still be able to bend, if not flat out CRUSH, most of the
rules of that tracker.. but somehow it felt like I was holding myself back.. that and the ridiculous notion of me
having to use a particular computer just for that one application.. (hardware compability issue) made it
really hard to stick with FT2. So, in the end I upgraded.. and HELL what an upgrade it is!
Renoise virtually does everything I want it to, well except store all VST/VSTI's in a single module allowing
me to save it once and for all and be done with it.. :P

My plans for renoise originally were to release the source code for all my songs, but recent events have
forced me to reconsider that option. 1) some fuck named timbaleinen (timbaland) ripped a song and used it without
the original authors permission 2) I've gotten incredibly lazy and can't be arsed to compile the VST/VSTI's into a zip
So, if you read the two reasons, you quickly realize that the real reason behind me pondering if I should release
into mp3 only is that I'm lazy :P So, I've decided to do a smart thing here, I'm putting up a poll on CTG which
basically helps me decide exactly how worthwhile it would be to keep releasing in modular format.
I mean, releasing in a modular format is really useless if nobody is going to download it right?
So, if you want source files in renoise format, jump over to my ctg page and vote NOW!

Also, I'm currently suffering from an extreme writers block due to my transition to renoise.. I guess
having unlimited power means that I'm blind because of all the possibilities.. however, I might have a little
oldschool surprise for everyone soon :P (hint, it's something I forgot about!)

Anyhow, if you're reading this, thanks for paying attention to this meager page which essentially doesn't
do anything but serve as my goddamn musical blogg :P

Thanks for reading !

//John Marwin

And oh yeah, I like these things in life:
