Corby Kingfisher 6 v 0 Wellingborough Rising Sun (5 November 2005)

Kingfisher were on Area Cup duty today and kicked off Guy Fawkes celebrations in style with a 6-0 victory over the team propping up division 4, a result that was never really in doubt. 10 out of 10 for the Kingfisher this term, a statistic Adie would’ve gnawed his own arm off for at the start of the season. With a depleted squad, Adie was forced to make changes, Junior Bash back in the sweeper’s role due to Scotty Mac going on a wasted journey to Ibrox to watch the Gers stutter to a nil nil draw with Aberdeen, and Ogsie replacing late withdrawal Lee in midfield. Rooney kept his place in goals, with Scriv and Eddie completing the back 3. Bash Senior and Scotty D joined Ogs in the centre, with Steve and Mister Harmonious Cam patrolling the flanks, and 24 goal partnership Jack and Gibby up front. Youth team players Jason and Tom made up the subs bench today as Stevie Melvin’s holiday to America reduced the average age of the squad by 50 years (and I include Bash in that). After our now obligatory 10 minute settling in spell, we stamped our authority on the game, playing passing football from the back and carving out some decent chances. On the one or two occasions the Rising Sun got the ball in the final third, Rooney was there to snuff out the danger. Cam and Gibby were linking up well down the left, and Ogsie was making the most of being back in the team and was all over the park, making tackles left right and centre, and playing plenty of good passes forward, and it was one of those that led to the opener. Jack latched onto Ogsie’s ball outside the area, and took it past every defender twice before rounding the keeper 3 times and slotting home with his left peg. If the thought of Jack scoring with his left seems hard to believe, then Eddie volleying home number 2 with his right is just plain daft. But that’s exactly what happened. Gibby’s corners were again causing havoc all day, and even though Rising Sun had done their homework and brought every man back to defend them, it simply wasn’t enough to stop Scriv’s knockdown to Ed’s right boot. Eddie struck home his second from another Gibby corner to bring us in 3 up at half time, this one going in via the more likely route of his left shin, and any game plan Rising Sun might’ve had was well and truly out of the window, and sure enough they reverted to damage limitation tactics, a familiar sight round Woods End these days. For the first time in what seems like months, we were even given a positive team talk at half time, and once again, I have to give top marks to Davey Norman running the line. I would also like to comment on an excellent performance from the ref, who showed how it should be done, although for legal reasons last week will not be mentioned.

We picked up where we left off in the second half, and threatened to pass Rising Sun off the park at times. Their heads had gone down and their minds were clearly focused on getting back to Wellingborough for a few swallies. But that weren’t gonna happen until we stuck another three past them, and despite their big keeper playing a blinder and keeping out Jack and Gibby a few times, it was only a matter of time before Jack the lad struck home number 4, again from another superb ball from Ogs. Young Tom replaced me down the right, and his cross from the edge of the box found Cam the Bam at the back post. Cam bulleted home an unstoppable diving header for his first of the season to bring the score to 5. This was a nightmare for me, as Cam was alongside me in the players not yet scored list. At this rate Rooney will get more than me this season. Still we poured forward, with Eddie and Jack on a hatrick, and Eddie in particular employed a shoot-from-anywhere style of play. With 20 minutes to go, Jason came on for some first team experience to give a well earned rest to Senior Bash, and lacked a bit of composure when a cool head would’ve got him on the scoresheet after great play from Jack set him up. Number 6 was probably the most bizarre goal of all time. Just when Scriv thought his luck was out after narrowly missing 5 or 6 headers in front of his wee boy, he got on the end of another Gibby corner and the ball was goal bound all the way, right up to the point when a Rising Sun defender tipped a great save over the bar. The ref, being better placed than me, judged the ball to be over the line and awarded the goal, which was fair enough, as it saved a sending off for the defender and lots of tedious paperwork for the ref. So a goal for Scriv boy, a clean sheet for the Roon Dog, a 6-0 win for the Kingfisher and a step closer to the treble. And a whole load of sausages and chips down the pub.

W'boro Rising Sun Preview

Team News: Fisher Athletic manager Adrian Kelly has the same squad as last week to pick from for this weeks Area Cup tie agaisnt W'boro Rising Sun, with only 'the skamp' Kieran Doherty missing from his choice. Doherty has reported back to camp via the guestbook and has said all is well in Hong Kong. The team didn't seem to miss last week with a comprehensive 4-0 win over Danite sports.

Current league positions would state that this match is an easy Fisher win, with Fisher currently flying high in Division 3 and Rising Sun struggling at the foot of Division 4, but who knows what will happen in the cup at the fortress which is Woods End Park.
