Matt Hardy: A Sell Out?
13 JULY 2005

Hey guys, sorry about the lack of updates, been busy. To make it up, this will be a big one.

Matty Hardy: A Sell-Out?

First, some background information to give you an idea of what has happened and with whom.

Matt Hardy

"Before his then-WWF debut with his brother Jeff, Matt was trained by former wrestler Dory Funk, Jr. Before signing with the WWF, Matt and Jeff ran their own wrestling promotion, OMEGA Wrestling, in which Matt competed under the name High Voltage. Other wrestlers associated with OMEGA include Christopher Daniels, the future Lita, Shannon Moore and The Hurricane. Once signed, the brothers formed an acrobatic tag team and became known as The Hardy Boyz. Although they had several managers during their tag team run, the five-time WWE Tag Team Champions were most prominently accompanied to the ring by Lita. The three together became known as "Team Extreme." Hardy and Lita were an off-screen couple for six years, and used to share a home in North Carolina. Their romance came to an end in late February 2005 (according to Matt's official website) due to Lita's affair with fellow WWE superstar Edge.
On the August 12, 2002 episode of RAW, Matt turned against Jeff, pitting him in a match against Rob Van Dam. A short time later he joined the SmackDown!October 3, 2002 edition of the show, Matt used outside interference from Brock Lesnar to defeat The Undertaker. roster. On the
With his MF'er (Mattitude Follower) Shannon Moore in his corner, Matt defeated Billy Kidman at the 2003 No Way Out in Montreal, Quebec to claim the WWE Cruiserweight Championship and, at WrestleMania XIX in Seattle, defended it against Rey Mysterio. The Mattitude stable also included the late Crash Holly as Shannon Moore's "Moore-on." Matt later disbanded the stable and returned to RAW in order to be able to travel and work with then-girlfriend, Lita." - Wikipedia

What Happened?

The whole story started off from a post made by Matt Hardy's message board administrator and friend...

"Dear Friends:

Let me get a few facts out of the way:

Matt Hardy & Amy "Lita" Dumas are no longer a couple.

Matt was forced to end the relationship.

It has come to my attention that a growing number of participants in this message board are "blaming" Matt for various "rumors" and more. I want to shed a little more light on the situation. This may be upsetting for some of you, but the truth tends to hurt.

I have known Matt Hardy for almost 10 years. He is truly my brother. He is a loving person, loyal friend, and he has always done the right thing in every aspect of his life. I had never known Matt to be more in love with someone than he was wih Amy. He would have gladly given his life for Amy.

Amy Dumas lied to Matt. Amy broke Matt's trust. While Matt told me this story of lies and deceit, I heard so much pain and anguish in his voice that it brought me to tears. I am still shocked and saddened at the pain that Matt has been caused by all of this. What is even more heartbreaking is the other man that precipitated the lies was supposedly one of Matt's better friends. Amy is not the only one who is guilty of lies and breaking trust.

I just wanted all of you to know that Matt Hardy is 1000% in the right in all of this, and I would have never believed that that Amy Dumas would have been capable of the doing this to Matt after all he has sacrificed for her.

Sincerely,
Thomas Simpson"

Post from Matt Hardy in response...

"Thomas, thanks for the all the love and support. Everything Thomas has said is absolutely true. I will address this appalling situation when the time is right. I greatly appreciate all of the support and encouragement all of you have given me throughout the years. May you all be well and happy. God bless....

Matt"

Edge was in the middle of a push at the time, so rather than punish him for cheating on his second wife and betraying a good friend, the WWE fired Matt Hardy instead.

"Hardy was released this past April after coming forward via public statements on his website www.TheMattHardy.com in regards to his then-girlfriend Lita getting involved with Hardy's long-time friend Edge, who was married. Hardy had been recovering from knee surgery at the time of the situation and was prepared to return to WWE when he was surprisingly given his release.
Fans immediately took to Hardy's cause, chanting "We Want Matt" and "You Screwed Matt" across the world at the pair. Those same fans have now helped Hardy get into a very enviable position, where his next move is going to change the outlook of the immediate future of both WWE and TNA."- Mike Johnson @ PWInsider.com

After getting fired, Matt Hardy started calling out the WWE, insulting them on his message board, but he DID say that he would go back to the WWE is he was asked back. His fans - known as M'Fers (Mattitude Followers) - carried on having his back and supporting him.

Then, reports started coming in that Vince McM,ahon - owner of the WWE - wanted Matt back.

"Although no talks have taken place, PWTorch.com states that there is a feeling Vince McMahon might eventually entertain the idea of bringing Matt Hardy back into the company. Baffled by the crowd's reaction to the Lita/Hardy/Edge situation, Vince is looking for opportunities to cash in on the anti-Lita, pro-Matt sentiment. There already seems to be a strong possibility of uniting Lita and Edge, and a Matt Hardy return could happen down the road.

Before rumors get out of hand, it should be noted that there have NOT been any talks between Hardy and WWE about a new contract. A Matt Hardy return is not in the plans, but it remains a long-term possibility."

Matt Hardy's new girlfriend Lori.

Then, Matt responded again towards the draft. The WWE does a draft once a year or show, swapping wrestlers from Raw to Smackdown! and visa versa. (note: unless you've been in a cave for the past 6 years, you'll know that wrestlers are exclusive for each WWE brand now.) This is to create more storylines between wrestlers. Sadly, this year as the WWE has moved channels from Spike to the USA, they will be loosing on average around $10,000,000,000 (ten million dollars) a year because of it. This is due to the WWE not being able to control sponsored commercials anymore. Anyway, back on topic. Because of it, the WWE have released quite a few wrestlers, including one of Matt Hardy's best friends, Shannon Moore. Matt had this to say about the draft.
"Greetings my amigos!

It's been a little while since I've really updated everyone on what's going on in the life of Matt Hardy--so, here we go. First and foremost, I want to thank everyone who has stood by my side through heaven and hell and supported and believed in me. As you all know, I've had alot on my mind recently and have spent quite a bit of time thinking about what the future holds for Matt Hardy. I have listened very closely to the opinions of my family and friends, my fans, and the professional wrestling community. To all the people that have chanted "We Want Matt"--your wait is almost over. As of July 11th, this Monday, I am a free man again and can wrestle for whoever I want, when I want. A week from tomorrow, on July 15th, I have my first match back in Indiana, PA, at the Kay arena for the APWF. The day after that, July 16th, it's the big one--Matt Hardy makes his Ring of Honor debut in Woodbridge, CT. I am very excited about wrestling in front of the diehard, you can't insult our intelligence ROH fans--they and I are more alike than you would ever believe. Who knows--since Shannon Moore is a free man now, I might even show up with my little MFer on some of my upcoming shots.

Speaking of Shannon, I was disappointed and relieved for him when he was released from the WWE this week. Shannon is a very hard worker, and had reinvented himself, and still no real push or opportunity. Back when Shannon was my Mattitude Follower, he really starting "getting it" from a working and entertainment standpoint. When I left Smackdown for Raw to be with the whore, sorry, Amy, Shannon was given a small opportunity and did well. For no rhyme or reason, it was back to being misused and underutilized (I know what it's like, that's the story of Matt Hardy's life). A couple of years later, Shannon is released after never having a fair shot. Like so many others, he was never given the ball to even have a chance to drop it. I personally loved his new look as "The Prince of Punk", and I think if used correctly he could have been a huge asset to the cruiserweight division. I'd be willing to bet Shannon could be a huge asset to an X division as well--TNA seems to have a better grasp on how to use smaller, talented wrestlers.

I feel bad for all the guys and girls who were released over the last couple of days. Hey, I know it's business--but it's a real sh*tty feeling when you give everything you have to a family that you love and adore, only to realize that THEIR love is conditional. Believe me, I know from experience. It doesn't matter if you're pregnant, just got married, or you find out your closest friend is having an affair with your girlfriend and committing adultery, the machine will dispose of you. Bubba and D-Von were quite a surprise, as they are an immensely popular tag team, and could make an IMPACT somewhere. I want to send shout outs to Bubba, D-Von, Shannon, Gangrel, Maven, Kidman, Spike, Akio, Charlie Haas, Jindrak, and Seven--as I consider all these guys friends. There are plenty of things to do out there besides the WWE, and all of these guys and gals will bounce back and be just fine. Please keep all these hardworking men and women in your thoughts and prayers.

The last few months have been the absolute hardest time of my life--but as they say, what doesn't kill you makes you stronger. When people f*ck me over, it drives and motivates me to make those people eat their words. I have learned so much through the course of this dark time in my life. Always stand your ground, don't let people run over you and tell you what you can and can not do. Call things like they are--if you screw up, don't be a coward and try to hide it, be a man and admit you messed up. As long as you always have good intentions, there's nothing wrong with making mistakes or making the wrong decision. Matt Hardy calls things like they are--I've never been too good at being "politically minded", but I am good at being honest and truthful. From this point on, Matt Hardy will not die, and no one is going to censor me or control me. Although there is alot of bullsh*t you have to deal with in the professional wrestling business, I wouldn't trade one moment of my past or future in for anything different. The people who have wronged me will ultimately get what they have coming to them in the end, because you reap what you sow, and karma a bizitch. I want to thank all my family and friends, my MFer's, the non-MFer wrestling fans, and the boys (all but one) for being so wonderful during the good and the bad throughout all these years. I got nothing but love for you all--I just ask for everyone to stick with me, the Movement is about to begin...

Matt Hardy
The Angelic Diablo"

As you can see, Matt phraised TNA (tnawrestling.com) and also has been doing show in past posts he made on his message board over at TheMattHardy.com. This caused TNA fans to start getting excited over the thought of Matt Hardy joining TNA. He was already scheduled to work ROH, so that told fans that thought the whole affair was a storyline that it wasn't. Then, only this past Monday, we see Matt Hardy attack Edge on WWE RAW.

"MATT HARDY SIGNS WITH WWE, RETURNS TO RAW

-Matt Hardy returned to Raw last night as part of an angle that was meant to look real and unplanned. He attacked Edge backstage and then jumped Edge later at ringside. He shouted on the house mic anti-WWE and anti-Vince McMahon comments. He even snuck in a Ring of Honor plug, and the mic even picked up his taunting of John Laurenaitis (someone who didn't believe in him in the past and with whom he butted heads behind the scenes). His comments were part of the WWE storyline portraying Hardy as an anti-establishment babyface who is on a mission now that he had his personal life ripped apart by Edge stealing his longtime girlfriend Lita away from him.

-In real life, Hardy did break up with Amy Dumas (Lita) after he discovered she had become involved in a relationship with Adam Copeland (Edge) on the road while he was home rehabilitating from surgery. Hardy took the personal heartache and betrayal public, and ended up being released by WWE for reasons not yet publicly revealed. Since then, he had orchestrated enough of a following through internet articles and various radio shows that his name was chanting at arenas worldwide. It eventually got Vince McMahon's attention.

-Backstage at Raw, he was not seen by anyone. He didn't hang out beforehand. He didn't hang out afterward. He showed up, did his on-camera angle, and then left. If he interacted with Edge and Lita off camera, it wasn't at the arena or in front of anyone else.

-Matt Hardy had to weigh the decision of whether to sign with TNA - which had made him a lucrative offer - or return to WWE, which in recent weeks had shown serious interest in bringing him back. The decision to sign with WWE was made within the last week.

-At the time of the Lita-Edge wedding on Raw a few weeks ago, there was no serious negotiating going on between WWE and Hardy. The video was shown so McMahon could test Hardy's popularity. Sources say it was more than anything the pop he received at that moment which convinced Vince McMahon to pursue Hardy.

-Hardy clearly became comfortable enough in recent days with WWE's confidence in him and his ability to be a featured, pushed, respected performer to make returning a strong possibility. Had he felt WWE was only using him to get Edge over, or still didn't believe in his main event potential, he likely would have held out for a different opportunity at a different time.

-If TNA had announced a TV deal with Spike TV by now, there is a very good chance he would have signed with TNA. There was a lot about the TNA contract and being a true independent contractor appealed to him. But the risk of waiting too long and ruining his chance to get his first real, sustained, top-tier push with WWE became too great.

-Hardy is not dating Lita (Amy Dumas) or even pursuing a reconciliation. He has moved on and is involved in another relationship already.

-His comments on his message board this week where he ripped on Lita and Edge was meant to feed into the idea that he would not be on Raw this week, an attempt to make his attacking Edge on Raw seem "more real" to a certain segment of his fanbase. He now risks, though, that same fanbase feeling used. I wrote in the July 2 Torch Newsletter: "The disappointing reality of the situation is that Hardy is a bigger deal outside of WWE as a renegade who was wronged than he is back with WWE as a wrestler who was wronged and a boyfriend who was betrayed, but leaped back as soon as WWE offered him a return ticket to the roster. Hardy would go from sympathetic folk hero to a sellout who was willing to actually turn a real-life heartbreak and betrayal into a mere wrestling storyline. It would be akin to Bret Hart returning to WWE a year after the Survivor Series Swerve to cash in and have a singles match with Vince McMahon, Shawn Michaels, or Earl Hebner. Those who sympathized with him would feel used, disappointed, exploited, and let down."

-He is working Ring of Honor's event on Saturday in Connecticut in a headline match against Christopher Daniels. He is still working that date, and will be in his WWE character. How fans react to that is going to be fascinating to watch. Will ROH fans revel in cheering the anti-WWE icon Matt Hardy, even realizing that in reality he's under WWE contract? Or will they reject him as someone trying to use ROH to further his pseudo-rebellion angle and see him as a corporate sellout?

-The fans who have the most to be upset about are those who sympathized with Hardy in the weeks right after his break-up with Amy Dumas, and interacted with him via email and on his message board at TheMattHardy.com. Hardy, in the exact same environment and context this weekend, spoke to them with zero sincerity, playing up his now storyline-hatred for Edge and Lita while saying outright that he relished being a free man not under McMahon's control. In reality, he was already under WWE contract (at least verbally at that point, and perhaps already with signature on paper), and in the same place that he poured his heart out in a real-life exchange with fans, he furthered a WWE storyline - with no decisive transition point. Wrote one member of Hardy's message board hours after Raw: "Rot in hell Mr. Hardy. You are going to have a rude awakening next Monday, my friend. The fans will no longer chant 'YOU SCREWED MATT' they will chant 'MATT SCREWED THE FANS.' Have a good night (I doubt you'll get any sleep)."

-Another member wrote a differing perspective: "To those saying that Matt sold out if he took a new WWE deal, I disagree. Look at it. How strong would a message from the fans have to be for the WWE to suck it up and offer Matt a new deal? To come crawling back to a guy they discarded like trash? I think this is a huge victory for Matt Hardy, and as far from 'selling out' as you can get. From all indications, if he has signed a new deal, he's done so on his terms. He's stressed how important being able to maintain this site is, how important The Matt Hardy Show is, and how important creative control of his character is. If Matt's back in the WWE full-time, you'd better believe he's done it his way. Selling out? Our boy rocked the establishment, baby!"

-Watching this play out, watching Matt react to various voices, seeing how the Edge-Lita-Hardy situation plays out when it's not considered real anymore, but instead is a scripted drama based loosely on reality, is going to be fascinating." -
Wade Keller, Torch editor

Outcome

Now because Matt Hardy has returned to the WWE, turning a shoot into as work (storyline based from facts), alot of his so called "M'Fers" are turning his back on him, calling him a sell-out. A few of these fans are TNA fans that wanted him in TNA and are upset because he said - according to them (becaise of the TNA phraising shown above)- that he was going to TNA. Wrong. He never once said that. He hinted at the possibility of it and that is all.

The others are sad "smarks" (so called smart wrestling fans that know what goes on behind the scenes etc.) that hate the fact they got outsmarted and didn't see it coming. Because this has swerved them into not seeing it coming, they are lashing out because they now feel dumb, blah blah blah. etc.

Then, to help with the storyline, Matt Hardy kayfabes (lies to make it seem real) on his message board yet again.

"If you guys are ready for a ride, jump the f*ck on. Well, I promised you all fireworks, so I hope I didn't disappoint. As of July 11th, 2005, my personal Independence Day, the Movement has begun-- and the Movement's purpose is two-fold. Purpose one--To never let anyone control what Matt Hardy says and does and thinks. Purpose two--To make Adam Copeland, Amy Dumas, and the WWE regret what they did to me, what they did to us. It's time for Matt Hardy to stand up for all the MFer's that have been chanting "We Want Matt", and "You Screwed Matt". Although you may not know this--you guys, the MFers, started the Movement months ago. I can now finally join the Movement because I am no longer controlled by the WWE. The McMahons, the Johnny Aces, and all of the WWE management can kiss my @$$. I did what I did tonight because for me to live with myself, Adam "Feces" Copeland must pay. I'm not going to let the WWE forget that they f*cked up when they released me instead of that scumbag home-wrecker. And Amy Dumas, you know what's it's like to have me as your closest ally--but you're gonna hate to see what it's like to have me as your worst enemy b*tch. Even though I didn't slash your tires FCF, slashed tires are going to be the least of your problems--Bank on it. A little message to the whore, the feces, and the horsesh*t "family" that is the WWE--Matt Hardy is like cancer, I don't go away and you won't find a cure. I thank EVERYONE that has supported me through thick and thin--I promise I will always be there for my MFers. I love you guys--and as I always say, without you, there is no me. I am going to turn a hugely negative situation into something that will benefit us. If you don't want to be able to predict what happens next, you're all in for a treat.

P.S. - If you're thinking about pressing charges Vince, I got a couple bucks, I'll fight it. Besides, I think I might have some pixs and video from a camera phone that shows your officers Rodney Kinging my @$$. My wrist is cut from the handcuffs, and I would suggest that there was a little unnecessary roughness involved in kicking me out of your building.

P.S.S. - And don't forget to catch Matt Hardy in action this Friday in Indiana, PA, this Saturday in Woodbridge, CT, and you never know where I'll show up on Sunday. And The Matt Hardy Show is so on...

Matt "F*cking" Hardy"

Matt arrested
Matt getting arrested and escorted out at Raw

Now we have other fans that think Matt is insulting their inteligence because he's using his board to further his career. Well no shit sherlock. They're sad because he lied to them and is kayfabing and a few are saying that isn't wrestling. I got news for those idiots, the WHOLE wrestling business is built arround lieing to the fans. All those wrestlers saying bad things about each other to build up a feud aren't liers? Or how about the interviews in magazines where they lie to build up kayfabe? It's called kayfabe and decades ago it happened all the time. Wrestlers would lie on TV, radio shows, rallies, EVERYWHERE to keep the secret that wrestling is "fake". The WWE is mixing shoots with works to create kayfabe, as only doing it on the shows doesn't work anymore. Everybody in on it has to continue kayfabe or kayfabe won't work. That includes doing it outside of wrestling like in clubs, message boards, sites etc. It's called being a proffessional wrestler.

Also all those people saying "he betrayed us" etc need to shut up. Since when were they fans of Matt Hardy the person? Last time I looked an M'Fer is a Mattitude Follower, Mattitude being a gimmick of the V1 gimmick. Not the real Matt Hardy. If they though a wrestler was going to tell them everying and not build up the feud, they must really have a low life is they think Hardy personaly attacked them, thinking they were friends. What a joke. Thats like me saying I'm friends with Konnan just because I met him once. Very sad.

This has made Matt Hardy the wrestler huge and shown how good he really is. It's too bad the so called "M'Fers" are turning his back on them because he didn't tell "frioends" the true. Well guess what? He DID say he would go back to the WWE. He didn't say he was going to TNA, only hinting. And furthermore, most of his fans voted for him to go back to the WWE.

This isn't about the M'Fers, it's about Matt Hardy the wrestler.

Conclusion
If you believe Matt Hardy is a sell-out, you clearly have no idea what a sell out is.

From all the information you have just read, has Matt gone against his morals for money? No. He even said he would go back countless of times. So all you people calling him a sell out need to go back and get a refund in english class badly.

Now, because I've just taken a strong tone with the idiots of the world, let me end on a good note. This is a great column that should help some "smarks" change their ways as it's a response to one such idi... err.. smark.

"Slamjam's column was a real eye-opener for me as far as understanding how some fans would react to Matt Hardy showing up on Raw. But I am a bit confused as to why he would react so emotionally to Matt's "betrayal." I have to admit that I marked out totally for Matt when he attacked Edge. I knew in my heart that it was all a work and he was going to show up in WWE again, but when he finally did, it was exciting and fun and everything a wrestling show should be!!

Why did I know it was all a work? It just all seemed too calculated on Matt's part, with all the postings to his website and the well-timed jabs he took at Lita and Edge. I mean, what purpose would burying Edge and Lita serve Matt if he wasn't returning to WWE? He had the support of the internet fans from the beginning; in fact, he may have lost some fans over the past few months because, let's face it, his constant comments on how he got "screwed" by "Feces" and "the whore" did get a bit annoying after awhile. If he was really joining up with TNA or ROH long-term, it would have been better for him to just lie low until his no-complete clause with WWE was up and then "shock the world" by showing up at TNA and/or ROH. That would have made more of an impact, and would have served his post-WWE career much better. And I think Matt knows that.

However, he chose to do things a lot differently, which should have been a warning sign to us "smart" fans that something was up. By staying in the public eye through the internet over the past few months, he was able to keep the Edge-Lita-Matt story alive. Yes, it seemed authentic on his part. He used his own personal website and message board to make his comments. He even started his own reality show. It was unchartered territory in wrestling storylines. That's why it was hard for us to say "it's a work, it's a work". It wasn't immediately obvious. And Matt was able to keep people like us talking until we had all but bet the house on the fact that he would NOT be returning to McMahon-land. And then, he did. Let's face it, he played us all.

And I don't fault Matt one bit for that. That's what wrestling is: it's all one big work. The longer I am a wrestling fan, the more I realize this. Furthermore, he gave all of us (or at least me) what we wanted to see--Matt vs. Edge. So I say "Bravo" to Matt Hardy. He pulled one over on all of us, and it was a big one. And you have to admit, whether he betrayed our "trust" or not, it was a damn fun ride while it lasted!!

In fact, I believe Matt paid us, the "smart" internet fans, the ultimate compliment by making us a part of this storyline. This storyline never would have worked without the internet. We kept it alive, we kept it going. Yes, Matt used us, but he used us to get all of us what we wanted. There is now NO DOUBT of the power of the internet. I daresay that, after this storyline plays itself out, even the McMahons will have no doubt of this. And that, my friends, is a victory unto itself.
